Introduction

1. What is Inforce 6420™ Application Ready Platform?

The Inforce 6420 platform is a compact solution based on Snapdragon™ 600/600E SoC core with a form factor of 16cm x 7cm. The plug-and-play Inforce 6420 hardware is designed with exclusive features to cater to a vast range of new enriched IoT spaces that require edge computing or to deliver solutions for collaboration and video conferencing systems by providing instant access to the rich I/O and connectivity that includes HDMI Input as well as dual HDMI outputs.

2. Does Inforce offer other form factors based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 600?

Yes. Several exciting form factor products including Pico ITX (Such as the Inforce 6410Plus SBC) and a Micro SoM measuring 28mm x 50mm (Such as the Inforce 6401) based on the Snapdragon 600 are offered by Inforce. Please check our website for more details.

3. How is the Inforce 6420 platform different from the Inforce 6410Plus SBC?

Both boards are SBCs and are similar in many aspects but cater to different solutions. They are both plug-and-play SBCs based on Snapdragon 600 SoC that provide product developers instant access to I/Os. While the Inforce 6410p is a generic platform that allow product makers to implement a multitude of use cases, the Inforce 6420 is an application ready design and comes with production ready software.

7. What are the accessories available?

8. Does the board support a cellular or GSM connection?

The Inforce 6420 does not include support for a wireless modem. Third party cellular modem dongles can be connected to the Inforce 6420 system via USB ports and may require special drivers from the respective manufacturers.

9. What is the storage capacity of the Inforce 6420 SBC? Is it expandable?

Please check on the exact product SKU for details on pre-loaded software and available memory. The on board storage (eMMC) capacity is 4GB expandable to 64GB.

10. What are the performance details of the Inforce 6420? What is the speed of the RAM?

The Inforce 6420 SBC provides Cortex-A15 class computing at 1.7 GHz with 2MB L2 cache. The Adreno™ 320 is capable of 90 GFLOPS of general purpose compute and provides support for OpenGL ES 3.0 (Halti) and OpenCL 1.2E. But note that these libraries are provided as binaries only.

The onboard 2GB DDR3 RAM operates at 533Mhz.

AnTuTu scores for the Inforce 6420 platform running Android is ~22000. All our Android releases are also validated with the Qualcomm Trepn™ Profiler to ensure that all cores are capable of operating at their maximum frequency.

11. What types of displays are supported and at what resolution?

This platform supports dual independent HDMI displays simultaneously that are both capable of FullHD resolutions@60Hz.

12. What are the capabilities of the video Decoder/Encoder?

13. What are the camera capabilities of the Inforce 6420 SBC?

The Inforce 6420 SBC doesn’t support MIPI-CSI cameras. Instead, video input capture is supported via the HDMI interface and thus HDMI cameras can be used. The maximum real-time input resolution is 1080p@60Hz. USB UVC class is also supported.

14. How much power does the board draw? Is it possible to measure the power?

The Inforce 6420 SBC is powered by a 5V/4A wall adaptor. The total power consumed ranges between 6W to 17W when different use cases are executed. There are no test points made available to measure run-time power on the board. But the input current through the DC jack can be measured during different use-cases. Please note that we do run the Trepn profiler as part of our validation process on all our stock Android releases.

15. What are the audio capabilities?

Audio is available through HDMI and USB. The Inforce 6420 SBC comes with a ringer speaker out connected through an amplifier. The HDMI has an 8 channel audio with 7.1 channel surround sound, with support to Dolby digital plus, Dolby True HD and DTS-HD master.

16. What documents are provided? Are board design files also provided?

We provide datasheets, user guide and a Hardware Reference Manual. Schematics are not provided for the Inforce 6420. Board design files are proprietary and confidential and hence not provided.

All software releases are accompanied with release notes, user guides and application notes that describe the installation procedure. Apart from these, all technical questions addressed to techweb@inforcecomputing.com are promptly answered once the product is registered with Inforce.

Networking, IO and Wireless

17. Does the device support networking and wireless?

Supported connectivity includes Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n + Bluetooth 4.0 (available via Qualcomm Atheros QCA6234.

18. How can I change the MAC address for WiFi/BT/Ethernet on my Board?

MAC addresses are fixed at the factory. Changing them should not be necessary since the correct addresses are programmed before the board is shipped. But if it is still required, please refer to the Release Notes and App notes available on Inforce’s TechWeb.

19. What are the IO interfaces available?

Standard I/O interfaces including GbE and on-board Serial Console are available. There are two USB 2.0 host port and one micro USB OTG port.

20. My serial console shows garbage characters. What could be wrong?

The serial port could be incorrectly configured. Please note that the correct settings are - 115200, 8, N, 1, No HW flow control. Please refer to the Hardware Reference Manual for the correct pin orientation of the serial port

Software

21. What operating systems are supported and what is the OS roadmap?

A BSP for Android Lollipop 5.1.1 version is available today as an officially supported package on the Inforce TechWeb. Please stay tuned for the announcements on our website for update releases.

22. Is root access possible? Could you please explain how to get root privileges in Android?

Yes. As Android derives from the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device gives similar access administrative permissions as on Linux. Please give below commands in adb shell to get root privileges

23. Is fastboot supported? How to enter fastboot?

Yes. To go to fastboot mode, press the <Dload> button before powering on the board. Release the button after the board has powered on.

24. I’ve modified the boot partitions on my board and the board is no longer booting. What should I do?

If the eMMC partitions have been erased or the partition table has been corrupted, you may have to RMA the board back to Inforce Computing. In particular, please avoid erasing the SBL partition.

25. Is Hexagon DSP supported on the Inforce 6420 platform?

Yes. The Inforce 6420 has one Hexagon DSP (version QDSP6 v4 @500MHz) and Hexagon SDK 1.2.2 supports development on this hardware. Hexagon SDK can be obtained from

26. How can I get kernel debug messages?

Connect the device’s serial port to the host PC. Boot into fastboot mode and issue the following command –

fastboot -c “console=ttyHSL0,115200n8r androidboot.hardware=qcom” boot boot.img

Debug messages should start to show up.

27. Why isn’t Google Play available on my board?

Google Play (previously Android Market) is part of Google Mobile Services (GMS) and is licensed separately from Google. This is usually available on commercial Android devices. Though our hardware is capable of meeting requirements of the Google Test Suite that would lead to GMS certification, we have not added this to our product.

Nevertheless, it is possible to sideload any Android application using the following commands:
